Description
Seaberry, also called sea buckthorn, is a versatile and beautiful multi-stemmed shrub. It has silvery green leaves and is medium tall reaching 8-12 feet in height with an equal spread. Seaberry shrubs are nitrogen-fixing and tolerant of a variety of conditions including dry soils, high pH, and high salinity. The vibrant orange fruit, borne in clusters along the stems, are astringent and high in vitamin C. The berries will remain on the shrub throughout winter and can be saved for the birds or harvested throughout. There are lots of thorns and winter harvesting of berries where the stems are tapped or vigorously brushed can release the berries with less pokes to the picker. This plant needs at least two plants for pollination but likely more because seedlings are dioecious (male or female) and are too young to be sexed (see special note below).
Landscaping: Best in full sun. Prefers moist, well-drained soils.
Size: 1 year old 80 ml plug. 6-16″ tall.
Zone 3
***Special note: Seaberry requires both a male and female plant for fruit production. Because our plants were started from seed, we cannot identify if a plant is male or female at this seedling stage. For approximately 5 seedlings, there is a 97% chance of getting at least 1 female and 1 male. This results in a 3% chance you get all males or all females in a bundle of 5. Plan accordingly as 1 plant will not produce berries!***
