Deciduous shrub with many red stems, grows small white flowers and berries, ideal for holding soil on steep banks. Prefers wet soils, does well in riparian areas, but is adapted to many soils. Unique dark-red stems provide for beautiful winter color. It also makes for a excellent bird habitat, the berries are readily eaten by many birds and the dense stems provided good nesting habitat. Not a preferred berry for human consumption.
