A light purple flowering shrub that grows 12-16′ high and wide.  Annual pruning can aid in maintaining desired height and improving form.  Common lilac is a hardy, fast-growing, long-lived perennial for interior Alaska and is great for bees and butterflies.  The blossoms and twigs can be used to make homemade fabric dyes (green and yellow).  The blossoms are excellent in lilac syrups and baking and can be used for cut flower arrangements.  Common lilac can also be planted as a wind break, privacy hedge, and in field borders and strips.

Landscaping: Full sun with good air circulation in neutral to slightly-acid soil.
